As an author and educator, I examine not just the way our democracy works—or, too often, doesn’t work—but also how our political system affects the well-being and potential of ordinary Americans. My work focuses in particular on economic insecurity and inequality, which I regard as the great economic challenges of our day, and on the performance of our democracy. As part of these investigations, I have developed new policy solutions, including the “public option” to allow everyone to have access to a quality health insurance plan modeled after Medicare.
